Skimming (also called speed reading) is a technique that you use when you only want to get the gist and the main ideas in a reading text without paying attention to the details. When you are skimming, you are moving your eyes up and down the page, left and right trying to understand what this reading is about.

Examples

  • Preview a text to find the main idea
  • Read the headings of charts and tables to know what they are about
  • Choose a book to borrow from the library
  • Decide what you would like to read in a newspaper or magazine
  • Preview a travel brochure to find your ideal destination

Scanning is a technique that you use when you quickly want to find specific information in a reading text. When you scan, you look through the text quickly to find a specific detail.

Examples

  • Recipe to check what ingredients you need or how long it will take to cook
  • Look up the meaning of a word in a dictionary
  • Check a timetable for your class or bus
  • Find the lowest prices at the supermarket catalogue
  • Advertisements to find what you want to buy
