Homestay Tips

The SBS Cultural Atlas is a great tool to find out about the culture of your homestay students. For example, the ‘do’s and don’ts’ and significant dates.

  • Having clear written rules available can avoid misunderstandings – for example, pinned to the fridge
  • Refer to the student Homestay Handbook and College values when dealing with students
  • The Homestay Standards and Terms and Conditions actually contain some important do’s and don’ts of homestay – please read them.
  • Reach out to the College as needed before an issue could get out of hand
  • Opening communication with the student’s parents can help
  • Keep track of the student’s academic performance

Student Insurance and Doctors Visits

Please see the Overseas Student Handbook linked here for information about student insurance (OSHC) and doctors. All Overseas Students have insurance. This insurance, in general, maps medicare; however, students need to use their OSHC number when accessing medical services. Some doctors will bulk bill using the OSHC number, but sometimes students will need to pay the doctor directly and then claim through their OSHC.Â
